Live Review

Once known as the “Paris of Sumatra”, Medan, located in Northern Sumatra, is Indonesia’s fifth largest city. While it no longer bears much resemblance to Paris, Medan is fast becoming a hotbed for adventurous travelers – us included! Here’s our go-to guide for things to do in Medan.

Located on Sumatra’s northern coast, Medan is Indonesia’s fourth-largest city after Jakarta, Surabaya and Bandung, and the largest Indonesian city outside of Java. It’s a city where Batak and Chinese culture blend seamlessly in its architecture but more importantly in its mouthwatering cuisine. Medan is the ideal starting point for a Sumatra adventure, as it’s within easy reach of Gunung Leuser National Park, home to Bukit Lawang orangutan sanctuary. Beyond that, just a few hours from Medan is Lake Toba, a supervolcano and crater lake. Relax on Samosir, a volcanic island situated right in the middle of the lake.

When To Go

Like most cities in Indonesia, Medan boasts sunshine nearly year round, with high humidity and average temperatures of about 23-31°C. Rainy season runs from October to March, though generally there’s no extreme temperature drop during this time. Medan is home to the International Coffee Festival, Medan Film Festival and Lake Toba Festival.

A trip down to Medan wouldn’t be complete without a visit to its nearby tourist attractions such as Lake Toba and Berastagi. Stand as the highest and deepest Crater Lake in the world, Lake Toba offers a spectacular view of its surrounding landscape. Situated right in the middle of the lake is Samosir Island, which hosts some really interesting traditional villages. In Tomok Village you will be able to visit Batak King’s tomb that is carved with mythical creatures.

Sipiso-piso Waterfall is crowned the highest waterfall in Indonesia. There are a few visitor points nearby this waterfall that offers a great vista of Lake Toba and the waterfall itself, making it a great photography point.

Berastagi is best known for two things – its fresh fruits and vegetable produce; and volcanoes. A hike up Mount Sibayak offers a great view of the Berastagi town. Since it still shows active geothermal activity, several steam vents and hot springs can be found around the volcano.
